Move over Cory Haim, Cory Feldman and Corey Hart- this one’s all about Cory Doctorow!
So THIS happened last night.
Cory Doctorow came to the small, independent bookstore I work at. And he was so smart and cool and interesting.
Now, I’ve known about Cory Doctorow for awhile now (although I admit that the first time he truly appeared on my radar was when Ernest Cline made him the President of the Oasis in Ready Player One- I totally get it now, Mr. Cline!).
Cory read a bit from his book, and he was as funny reading the prose as he was writing it. I’m pretty picky when it comes to author readings- if you’re not going all out and reading with emotion, than maybe you should just give a talk and then skip to questions. Cory was most definitely into it- he even patted the wall behind him when reading aloud that his character was doing the same- 100 points to Doctorow’s Harry Potter house of choice (willing to bet it’s Ravenclaw)!
After his reading, Cory answered questions, talked about politics and it’s link to science fiction, optimism vs. pessimism in the genre, Burning Man, his amazing gamer wife, and all the awesome narrators of his audiobook for Walkaway. That little card in the picture? It contains a flash drive that flips over to plug into your computer or device.
The awesome narrators? Wil Wheaton, Amber Benson, Amanda Palmer, Mirron Willis, Gabrielle de Cuir, Lisa Renee Pitta, and Justine Eyre!
I’ve been to a lot of great author events in the last 7 or 8 years, but this was one of the very best! Cory actually took the time to talk with me and my librarian friend, B, before and after the event. I don’t know why I’m always so surprised when someone whom I consider to be a Rock Star Author is actually a really cool, decent human being, but it still delights me.
Also, I am giving myself a thousand points for not bringing up the whole President of Oasis thing (at least not to him, I may have whispered it to my friend B a few times).
