Welcome BACK to my Sundays In Bed With… Meme! The meme that dares to ask what book has been in your bed this morning? Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed, or which book you wish you had time to read today!
I know, I know, I switched to In Bed With a Book meme, but I’m switching back. I’m done trying to make this a blog hop, but still feel free to participate! Maybe someday I’ll try to make it happen as a blog hop again, but right now I feel like Gretchen trying to make ‘fetch’ happen.
This morning I’m reading:
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
I’m nearing the end of this one, and I’m very much enjoying the book (I’m both listening and reading this one). I’ve been meaning to read this book since I started work at the bookstore- it’s one of our bestsellers and my coworkers love the series. Then one of my library book clubs picked it for this month’s read, and I knew the time had come. I also choose this book to read with my bestie, Bittner, because we are revamping our long distance book club. What better book to read with a good friend?
The main theme of this book is the female friendship- especially the ones arising from childhood. How obsessive and competitive they can be, but also how a good friend can push us to greatness. I don’t have any really long standing friendships (although I am Facebook friends with two of my childhood friends, we are not close at all, partly because we were only friends because we either lived near each other or went to school together, and once I moved the friendship dissolved. I’m still fond of them, though, which is why we’re FB friends, but we have little in common now). I still have a few high school and college friends I stay in touch with, but again it’s mostly on Facebook or they’re friends I’ve reconnected with after having lost touch. The friends I made in my later 2o’s and 30’s are the ones I’ve been the closest to, and the one’s I’ve maintained mindfully. They aren’t the obsessive friendships I might have had with my childhood friends, and none of them are competitive. I just know what a good, healthy friendship looks like now and I value them.
That said, this book is totally my jam.
Also, once again, I am so glad I was born in a time and place where women are more than just an object to marry off.
What are you reading (or wish you had time to read) this morning? Are you reading the book you thought you’d be reading, or has today found you with a surprise?
