What I Reviewed:

Female Authors: 17
Male Authors: 8
Favorite Book(s) Read:
The Fireman by Joe Hill
This is an epic book. It really felt like a love letter to his dad’s book The Stand, and weirdly, to Mary Poppins. As I happen to love both of them, I loved this book too. I read the eArc of this, but I am really looking forward to listening to this one on audio!
The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4) by Maggie Stiefvater
A magical ending to a series that I have loved so hardcore that it actually hurts to have finished it. Series books tend to have disappointing ends, but Stiefvater delivers. I have the hardback version, but I was impatient to start the book so I ended up listening to it on audiobook on the way to pick up my copy, and then stuck with it so I wouldn’t flip to the back of the book to see if Gansey lived (I so did not trust myself). Now that I’ve listened to it, I’ll probably do a slower re-read of the print version so that I can absorb all of the magic. I may have to go sob in the corner now, because I can’t deal with a future that doesn’t include looking forward to a new Raven Cycle book…
Also, The Winner’s Kiss would have made this list in a month where I hadn’t read The Raven King and The Fireman. 😉
Least Favorite Book Read:
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
You might be thinking to yourself, but Kate, it’s not on your list of books you read this month! True, because I couldn’t finish it. Or, more to the point, I didn’t want to finish this. I was supposed to read this for one of my library book clubs, and while the main reason I joined was to read outside my comfort zone (I don’t read lots of literary fiction), this is the first time in months that I didn’t like or couldn’t finish a book. I like that the author was trying to bring awareness to environmental concerns, but it was heavy handed and I hated the characters.
Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle #3)
Siege & Storm (The Grisha #2)
No Coming Back
Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain
Playing With Fire
The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4)
The Glittering Court (The Glittering Court #1)
The Star Touched Queen
Down With The Shine
Burn Baby Burn
A Tyranny of Petticoats
Shiny Broken Pieces (Tiny Pretty Things #2)
Money Spent (not counting box subscriptions and Audible credits): $44.55
So, I need to really be paying more attention to my pre-orders! I accidentally pre-ordered The Glittering Court in both Kindle format and Audible, and I honestly forgot about Down with the Shine and The Star Touched Queen. Well, not that I forgot they were pre-ordered, but I just didn’t have a real sense of when they were coming. I’m not unhappy with the amount I spent, but I really need to be more thoughtful of what I’m bringing into my home and throwing on my TBR shelves. I’m so busy trying to read books long neglected, that I really should only buy books that I will definitely, without a doubt, read right away.
Books that I bought this month and actually Read this month: 3 (4 if you count Down with the Shine, which I previously read, and 5 if you count Shiny Broken Pieces, which I got to keep after an ARC tour). That’s better than most months, so that makes me happy!
April was a good month. I got a lot read, quite a lot from my TBR piles too! I spent FAR less money than last month and I read some really good books. Nothing under a 3 star! I did Readathon with my nieces, and got through several graphic novels that have been on my shelves (or borrowed from the library), and had a lot of fun with it. I also wrote a lot of reviews (at one point I was actually caught all the way up!), and did a better job with posting. I fell off the comment wagon a bit, but I’m always jumping back on it, so I’m okay with that.
My plans for May are more of the same- although I’d like to spend a little less money on books. I do have my birthday coming up, so hopefully that will include a gift card or two to offset future purchases. 😉
