Teenage sleuth Kippy Bushman is back in this murderously funny sequel to No One Else Can Have You, which was named a Time Magazine Best Young Adult Book of the Year.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Friendship, Wisconsin...
After catching her best friend’s murderer a few months ago, Kippy thought the worst was over. Then she found her boyfriend at home, barely breathing and clinging to life. The sheriff insists it was a suicide attempt, but Kippy refuses to believe it. Given everything that’s happened to her, she wonders if something more sinister is going on. Without any evidence, no one will listen to her—except maybe her former nemesis. But in a town where everyone has their secrets and a next-door neighbor could be a serial killer, you take all the help you can get.
Even more shocking and thrilling than its critically acclaimed predecessor, Nothing Bad Is Going to Happen is another clever, riotous dark comedy from Kathleen Hale that finds the perfect balance between the humor and horror.
~ I read the first book, No One Else Can Have You back in 2013, and it was one of my favorite books that year. Then the author, Kathleen Hale, went off the rails and stalked a blogger. This review is in no way an endorsement of her behavior or her actions. If I hadn’t already fallen in love with Kippy Bushman, I seriously doubt I would have picked up a Kathleen Hale novel after reading about what she’d done (which she totally wrote about, outing herself in a bit of a bizarre way). But, I do love Kippy, and while I understand those of you who have sworn off her books (I feel the same way about John Grisham after troubling remarks he made and I won’t be spending any of my money on his books), I still really wanted to read this book. So, I did. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. And you can yell at me if you want. 🙂 Or you can join the ranks of people on Goodreads who have one starred her new book in protest.
~WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS OF BOOK ONE, NO ONE ELSE CAN HAVE YOU.
~ Ralph is in jail, and Kippy, in typical Kippy fashion is still communicating with him. It should not be funny… but it is. In her response to one of Ralph’s letters, Kippy writes that she does not forgive him, mentions that several times, but still signs it Love, Kippy.
~ Kippy is still healing from the final showdown she had with the killer from No One Else Can Have You, but her cast is coming off and so are her pants- she has big plans with Davey. Sexy sex plans. And because she’s Kippy, she has note cards and is studying different techniques. 😉
~ Kippy keeps thinking she sees Albus, her former roommate from the mental hospital, in random places.
~ Things go terribly wrong on the night Kippy plans to give herself to Davy, instead she finds him near death. Most people think it’s attempted suicide, but Kippy believes it was attempted murder.
~ Kippy is back on the case! Because she’s on the outs with Dom, Kippy ends up relying on Miss Rosa and Libby to help her find answers.
~ Miss Rosa, with her adorable Eastern European accent and survival skills and knife/trap setting lessons, and Libby with her unexpected moves, were among my favorite things about this book.
~ What didn’t work for me: the scene where Libby and Kippy visit a suspect and he gets unbelievably aggressive with Kippy. Although, it does end with Libby doing something had me cheering. Also, for obvious reasons, there is less Davey in this book, and I missed his character.
~ I did kind of guess the who, although not the why, of the mystery, but the fun was in how Kippy finally gets there.
~ There is room for another book, and I honestly could read about Kippy Bushman forever. The books have the strangeness and quirk of Twin Peaks, and I can’t get enough.
Kippy Bushman- our strange, weird, often emotionally inappropriate heroine.
Libby Quinn- popular girl who sees being friends with Kippy has her Gah given duty as a Christian- the girl has hidden depths though, and she was one of my favorite parts of this book.
Dom Bushman- Kippy’s guidance counselor dad. He’s trying so hard to be everything to Kippy since her mom died, but can’t deal with her dating.
Davey Fried- Kippy’s older, attractive and PTSD suffering boyfriend.
Dr. Ferguson- former psychiatrist at Cloudy Meadows, still seeing Kippy.
Miss Rosa- Dom’s current girlfriend and Kippy’s ex anger management group leader. Everyone needs a Miss Rosa in their lives.
Sheriff Bob Staake- uh, the sheriff. He’s mostly 100% incompetent, and has taken all the credit for the murder Kippy solved in the first book.
Ralph Johnston- Kippy’s former neighbor and former friend, currently he’s discovering that Orange is the new Black.
Jim Steele- lawyer, helping Dom and Kippy sue Cloudy Meadows.
Albus/Adele- Kippy’s ex-roommate from Cloudy Meadows who helped her escape.
Colt- current boyfriend to Libby, although he’s not exactly a one girl kind of guy.
Dollar Dan- football player and complete asshat.
Kippy and Libby’s fight. They both say some awful things, but Libby really hands Kippy a big old dose of truth. Honestly, I’d read a book from Libby’s pov. Or Miss Rosa’s.
Stop the Clock:
Nothing Bad Is Going To Happen is a fitting sequel to the first book, although maybe a tad more disturbing. I’d personally share these books with my 14 and 16 year old nieces, but they;re both pretty mature for their age… and they probably have watched worse things on cable. And honestly, we’re a little strange and weird in my family, so while Kippy is on the extreme end of the crazy spectrum, she could still be related. 😉
