Welcome BACK to my Sundays In Bed With… Meme! The meme that dares to ask what book has been in your bed this morning? Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed, or which book you wish you had time to read today!
I know, I know, I switched to In Bed With a Book meme, but I’m switching back. I’m done trying to make this a blog hop, but still feel free to participate! Maybe someday I’ll try to make it happen as a blog hop again, but right now I feel like Gretchen trying to make ‘fetch’ happen.
This morning I’m reading:
Half-Blood (Covenant #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
I love Jennifer L. Armentrout’s writing- I spent about 7 hours in a car yesterday going to and from Baltimore to attend KissCon, and she was the main reason. But I came late the Armentrout party, so while I’ve read a lot of her newer books, including The Return, which is a spin off of the Covenant series, I missed Lux and Covenant the first time around. So I picked up Half-Blood on audio and I’m over half way through now.
I’m having a few issues with it, though. Firstly, it’s very Vampire Academy-ish. Which, once again, I was late to the VA books, but I have read that series (and Bloodlines, which is one of my all time favorites), and I kind of remember the comparisons made years ago when Half-Blood came out, so I know I’m not alone in this. But when I read The Return, it didn’t remind me of Vampire Academy at all, and I think if I can make it through this book to book 2, Pure, I’ll be fine and Armentrout’s series will come into it’s own. And I know I like the characters enough to continue, but I’ll be reading the other books on my Kindle or in print because- see reason 2.
Secondly, I’m not enjoying the narration. Justine Eyre narrates, and I’ve listened to her before. She has a good voice… except when it comes to male voices. The boys, except Seth, all sound the same, which is bored and snobby. I can imagine their noses scrunched up as they speak, like they’ve smelled something bad. It probably won’t stop me from listening to other book books narrated by Eyre, but it can’t be this series unless anyone has listened to the later books and can vouch that she gets better on the dude voices?
I’m actually not sure how much I’ll get to read today, since the Hubs is taking me to the movies. We’re going to see Ex-Machina.
What are you reading (or wish you had time to read) this morning? Are you reading the book you thought you’d be reading, or has today found you with a surprise?
