Welcome to my new blog hop/meme In Bed With a Book! Why limit ourselves to just Sundays anymore? Stop by anytime during the week to share what book is in your bed, and be sure to hop to other blog participant’s sites as well. I’ll post a new link each Sunday, but you can add your post any day of the week.
This morning I’m reading:
Dead To Me by Mary McCoy
I am loving this book! I’m almost done (and a good thing too, since I have 4 other review books that I need to read this week) and it’s going to be one of those books that linger with me for awhile. It’s a YA tale set in the late 1940’s, the main character Alice loves hard boiled detective stories and so when her sister, whom she hasn’t seen in 4 years, turns up in a hospital savagely beaten and left for dead, Alice puts her book knowledge to use. I’m a huge fan of old movies, and there’s something about the 1940’s that I especially love, and this book does invoke the time era. I really like Alice, and while the mystery isn’t super complex (we’re told who the bad guys are fairly early) it still has tons of action and Alice using her wits to stay alive. There’s even a nod to the Black Dahlia case. It’s easy to look at the past and think that people were more innocent and less violent, but there have always been monsters in our world, there have always been the darker side to our light, and McCoy definitely explores that. This is a great introduction into fictionalized film noir, for teens or adults. Now I’m feeling the urge to rewatch The Postman Always Rings Twice…
I’m also spending time today with the World Cup finals in Brazil between Germany and Argentina. My friend Kim and I have taken to calling it World Cup HottieThon. Because soccer players are hot, for the most part. I’ve always been a soccer fan since we grew up playing it, and I’ve been a loyal World Cup watcher since 1994. I’m a little torn today, but I’m betting on Germany. I’m half German and I usually root for them when they aren’t playing the US team, but I’ve always loved Argentina as well. The Germans are coming off that huge win against Brazil (7 to 1 in soccer, especially during a World Cup, is almost unbelievable!), but Argentina is going to have a lot of fans in the stands, so we’ll see! Honestly, both teams have what it takes, and they have two of the best players in Messi (Argentina) and Mueller (Germany). The game is at 3pm EST, and ya’ll should watch it!
What are you reading (or wish you had time to read) in bed this week? Are you reading the book you thought you’d be reading, or has today found you with a surprise? Link up below! I’m going to try running this more like a blog hop, so feel free to add the link in your meme posts!
