Anna Moder has just witnessed a shooting, seen her car pulverized, and rescued a wounded stranger only to discover he's really a werewolf. And by her recent standards, things are actually looking up. Lycanthropes don't faze Anna. Doctoring a wolf pack outside Grundy, Alaska, is the closest thing to home life she's known in years. But hitching a ride to Anchorage with long-absent pack member Caleb Graham that&'s a risk. Part of her itches to whack his nose with a newspaper. The rest is trying unsuccessfully to keep her own paws off every delicious inch of him.
The problem is, Caleb employs his lupine tracking abilities as a notquite- legal bounty hunter, and Anna is suspicious of both him and his profession. On the run from her past, with old problems closing in, she'd like to stay far, far away from anybody with connections to the law. Caleb, however, seems determined to keep her close. Are his intentions noble, or is he working a more predatory angle?
Anna's been dreaming of returning to a semi-normal life, but now she's experiencing a strange new urge . . . to join Caleb in running with the wolves.
I love audio books. In the author’s notes on the audio version of Joe Hill’s NOS4A2, he talks about how the first stories we learn are read to us. I listen to audio books when I’m in the car, shopping, and playing Candy Crush.
In typical book blogger fashion, I already have a tbr shelf just for audio books. Reviewing them is a bit more difficult, because I don’t take notes and I don’t always know how to spell the characters names. So these reviews will be a little different from my book reviews.
Anna is in hiding from her crazy, abusive husband when she encounters sexy werewolf Caleb. He’s a bounty hunter (swoon!) with ties to our beloved town of Grundy, Alaska. Anna and Caleb, of course, have off the charts chemistry, and Harper builds up the tension so well, it’s hard to believe that she’s not married to a sexy werewolf herself (or is she? Mr. Molly Harper, we’re going to require a dna sample). But, oh, secrets. They can keep lovers apart.
Both Anna and Caleb are well matched. I really enjoyed their road trip and the glimpses into Anna’s past- even if they were traumatic because of the abusive, evil husband. What Harper does really well is bringing together characters who don’t complete one another- they simply make each other better and add goodness to their lives (after misunderstandings and usually some violence befalling one or both of them, but hey, it’s a paranormal romance, there will be blood!). While it may be unrealistic to expect a sexy werewolf to bring you along on a roadtrip, or end up in that werewolf trap you have set up in your backyard, it is realistic to expect that the person you fall in love with is going to add, not take, from your life.
As much as I love Harper’s vampire series, I’m really enjoying her version of werewolves as well. I love how they mate for life, always a selling point in my opinion. Of course, you need to be careful who you claim (and how- read book 2 for further clarification). Caleb is the exact person Anna needs, and in return she makes him a better person and bounty hunter. I hope there’s lots and lots more in this series! Also, the ending, with a couple of special guest stars, made me so happy to read!
Oh, Amanda Ronconi, we’ve been here many times before. She’s become one of my auto-buy narrators. I swear, it’s like she is Molly Harper- the way she reads the stories is so natural. She’s the narrator I’ve listened to the most this year (listening to her narrate a novel now, as a matter of fact). I don’t know that I can heap any more praise on her- she makes the books she reads come alive. You know how people complain that social media sites don’t have a sarcasm font? Well, Ronconi definitely has a gift for sarcasm and snark. If there were a sarcasm font, and if it had a voice, it would be Amanda Ronconi. But she can also do wide-eyed innocence, chagrin, and passion. So, yeah, go on and download this audiobook already!
