Welcome to my Sundays In Bed With… Meme! The meme that dares to ask, what book has been in your bed this morning? Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed, or which book you wish you had time to read today!
This morning I’m reading:
Ocean City (Ocean City #1) by Katherine Applegate
So right now I’m enjoying the sand and surf and sun (possibly sun, maybe rain) in Ocean City, Maryland. I’ve have been to this beach over 2/3’s of all the summers of my life. I even lived in Ocean City for a little over a year in my extremely early 20’s. I love it, and this series from the 90’s pretty much clinched my desire to live there year round. I originally found this book when I was in Ocean City on vacation- possibly in the 8th or 9th grade. We were staying in a hotel that was right across from a drug store. I went in for the latest YA Thriller, and came away with this instead- of course this was when I rarely bought any books that weren’t on the shelves of a grocery story unless I was at the used bookstore on the Boardwalk. I was excited that it just happened to be about the very town in which I was staying.
If this series were published today it would probably be categorized as New Adult, because all of the characters are either 18 or older. They’re dealing with sex, romance, jobs (yup, they actually all have to work!), marriages, green cards, rent and what the hell to do with the rest of their lives. I love it for the same reason I love Grey’s Anatomy- a little bit of a soap opera but relate-able characters even though the vibe Applegate was going for was probably more Mtv’s Real World. Gosh, remember when that show was good? Never mind, some of you weren’t even born when the good ones aired. Sigh.
I can’t wait to re-read this one! I could say that it was the first re-read in years (since I’m 36), but in all honesty, I totally re-read this series just a few years ago and I occasionally pick this one up when I’m looking for a comfort read. I love all of the characters so much and they’ve stayed with me even all these years later. Has it aged well? I’ll let you know!
Oh, and this book is why when I went away to college I started introducing myself as Kate instead of Katie.
What are you reading (or wish you had time to read) this morning? Are you reading the book you thought you’d be reading, or has today found you with a surprise? Link up below! I’m going to try running this more like a blog hop, so feel free to add the link in your meme posts!
